What Are Valve Castings?

Butterfly Valve Casting
Valve Body Casting

Valve castings are the valve components formed by the metal casting process. Valves work by controlling the flow of gases, liquids and slurries by piping systems, which have been essential components in a wide range of industrial applications. Casting is a preferred manufacturing solution for valve components, such as valve bodies, bonnets, discs, plugs, seats, and other components.

For more than 20 years, CFS Foundry has been a reputed valve casting manufacturer in China. The valve casting process at our company involves pouring molten metal into a mold, allowing it to solidify, and creating complex shapes as desired. We employ advanced casting methods to meet the specific requirements of our customers. The material type, dimensions, and other factors will all affect the selection of a casting method.

Our Manufacturing Capabilities for Valve Castings

CFS Foundry has both casting and machining capabilities for valve parts production. Our casting process can create near net or net shape with mininum material waste. The extra machining services can enable us to deliver finished valve castings for our customers.

Investment Casting

Investment Casting

Investment casting is a precision casting process that begins with the creating of wax patterns, which are the exact copy of the desire shape. This process can make valve castings with smooth surface finish and high dimensional accuracy. So, it is a preferred manufacturing method for producing steel valve castings that require intricate geometries and tight tolerances.

Sand Casting

Sand Casting

Sand casting is another casting process different from investment casting. It is mainly applied to manufacture larger valve castings with cast iron. The surface finish and dimensional accuracy is slightly worse than that of investment casting, but costs less. CFS Foundry can produce sand cast valve bodies, valve bonnets or other parts with grey iron or ductile iron material.

CNC Machining

CNC Machining

CNC machining is often employed as a secondary process after casting to achieve precise dimensions and a smooth surface finish. The CNC machining process at CFS Foundry involves using computer-controlled tools to remove excess material to meet the exact specifications of valve parts. So, we can deliver finished valve castings to our customers including machining.

Top 5 Benefits for Valve Parts Casting

Valve Casting Process

1. Allowing for More Design Flexibility

Casting offers great design flexibility for valve castings, making it an ideal manufacturing process for complex valve parts. With casting, CFS Foundry can easily create intricate valve components that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with other metal forming processes. This flexibility also allows for the adjustment of redesigning valve parts to suit better applications . This capability makes casting particularly useful for producing components for different types of valves, such as gate valve, butterfly valve, globe valve, check valve and more.

2. Wide Selection of Metal Materials

At CFS Foundry, our casting processes suits a wide range of metal materials, allowing valve manufacturers to choose the most suitable material for specific valve applications. Valve components could be cast from different metals such as carbon steel, stainless steel, ductile iron, and even aluminum. The selection of material type should consider several factors, such as the properties, working enviroment, budget, and so on. Our company has rich experience in casting valve components, we can help our customer to select the most suitable casting material.

3. Can Create Near Shape or Net Shape Valve Castings

Casting can create near net shape or net shape valve components. This means that valve parts by casting process can be produced with minimal variation from the final desired shape, Near-net shape casting not only improves the dimensional precision of the parts but also enhances the overall performance by minimizing distortions or defects. This capability is particularly beneficial for producing valve bodies, bonnets, and other complex components where dimensional accuracy and consistency are critical.

4. Less Machining Operations

One of the significant advantages of casting for valve parts is the reduction in the need for machining operations. Since casting allows for precise replication of the design, many valve components require only minimal finishing work, such as surface smoothing or light machining. This reduction in machining operations helps lower manufacturing costs, shorten production lead times, and increase overall efficiency. By reducing the amount of material removal, casting also contributes to more sustainable production processes.

5. Reduced Material Waste

In terms of material use, casting is an efficient manufacturing process that only requires filling the mold with metal to obtain valve parts. Processes that do not require large amounts of material to be cut from solid billets, such as machining, greatly reduce material waste. In addition, excess material from the casting process can often be recycled and reused, further reducing waste and contributing to cost savings.

Valve Casting FAQs

CFS Foundry can customize valve components with several casting processes, like investment casting, sand casting and die casting. The selection of a casting process mainly depends on the material and part structure. For example, a stainless steel valve body part is mainly produced from investment casting. If the material is iron, sand casting process is the correct option.

For a new designed valve cast part, CFS Foundry can finish the first sample within 4-5 weeks, and another 5-6 weeks for mass production. The samples will be first sent to our customer for approval before mass production.

Today, CFS Foundry has been a premier valve casting supplier in China. We are committed to offering complex, durable, and high-performance valve parts, which can withstand extreme conditions, from high pressure to corrosive environments. From material selection to final dimensional tolerances, we always inspect each side with the strictest quality standard.
