Stainless Steel Investment Casting for Butterfly Valve Body & Disc

A butterfly valve is a shut-off valve with a relatively simple construction. In closed position, the disc blocks the valve bore while in open position, the disc is turned to allow flow. A quarter turn takes the valve from fully open to fully closed position, or opposite, and thus the butterfly valve allows for quick opening and closure.

Compared to other types of valves, butterfly valves have the advantages of simple construction, not taking up too much space, the light weight and lower cost. So, there are a broad range of applications for butterfly valves: water supply, wastewater treatment, fire protection and gas supply, in the chemical and oil industries, in fuel handling systems, power generation, etc.

Stainless Steel Investment Casting for Butterfly Valve Body & Disc

Butterfly valve mainly consists of 4 main components, namely: the body, seat, operator or valve handle, and disc. Among them, butterfly valve body and disc are mainly designed with stainless steel materials for its good rust resistance and corrosion resistance. Investment casting process can customize different types and sizes of stainless steel butterfly valve bodies and discs. The combination of these feature make this series of valves and excellent and ideal choice for applications in aggressive atmospheres and harsh wash down situations – often incurred in food plants.

stainless steel investment casting process

Main stainless steel investment casting process of butterfly valve body and disc include: After mould is prepared, wax is injected into an aluminum die to produce a pattern that is an exact replica of butterfly valve body or disc to be produced. The patterns are clustered around a coated sprue and repeatedly dipped into an agitated vat of ceramic and allowed to dry. After a shell thickness has been built; the molds are dewaxed by either flash firing at high heat or autoclaving (pressure and steam). The shell building process is the same, except for one very important step. After the shell has been dewaxed and fired, we then inhibit the shell using a proprietary technique to eliminate the metal mold reaction that would normally take place between fused silica and molten magnesium. This along with the very thinnest shell in the industry allows us to cast thin sections and complex shapes that would be impossible with other methods of shell construction. The hollow shells are then preheated to 800-2000 F. After cooling, the ceramic is vibrated and blasted off the butterfly valve body or disc and discarded. The cleaning operations (cut off, grind, heat treat, straightening, and blast) of stainless steel butterfly valve and dis castings are quite similar to other stainless steel investment castings.
