So, what is pumping head or just “head?” Head is the maximum height that a pump can move fluid against gravity. The purest example of this is if you have a vertical pipe extending straight up from the discharge outlet. A pump with 5m of head will pump fluid up the pipe 5m from the discharge outlet.
Like other pump components (pump body, pump impeller, etc), stainless steel casting pump head is manufactured according to buyer’s drawing or sample. By stainless steel investment casting, pump head can achieve better size accuracy and smoother surface than that of sand casting.
Why Stainless Steel Casting for Pump Head?
Stainless steel casting of pump head is a complex and multi-step investment casting manufacturing process. An initial wax pattern of the part to be cast is coated with a ceramic refractory material and fired. The wax is then melted out to leave a ceramic cavity, into which the molten metal or alloy is poured. Upon cooling, the stainless steel solidifies and the ceramic mold is broken out, leaving behind an exact duplicate of the desired pump head part.
Stainless steel investment casting enables near-net-shaped pump head with complex geometries and intricate details. Besides, pump head made from stainless steel investment casting process have excellent surface finishes and require very little secondary machining; they also allow for tighter dimensional tolerances (typically, a linear tolerance ISO 8062 CT5-CT6 standard can be followed).
Due to the high material cost and the low material waste during the production process, stainless steel casting is very suitable for the manufacturing of pump parts including pump head. That said, it makes most economic sense to use the stainless steel casting process for various pump head that have complex shapes that can not be machined from materials directly.
