Caterpillar Bucket Teeth

What Are Caterpillar Bucket Teeth?

Caterpillar (CAT) bucket teeth are the replaceable, metal tips that fit onto the bucket edges of Caterpillar-brand excavators, loaders, and other earthmoving machinery. These ground-engaging tools are essential for cutting into soil, rock, or other materials, allowing the bucket to scoop and move material more efficiently. Designed to endure heavy wear and tear, CAT bucket teeth are typically made from high-strength alloy steels, undergo specialized heat treatments, and feature various shapes or profiles to suit different digging and loading conditions. Their durability, ease of replacement, and optimized cutting capabilities help maximize machine performance and minimize downtime on construction and mining projects.

Grade 348-52HRCakv≥20J≥1550Mpa≥5%≥1100N/mm2

For general purpose, we recommend Grade 2 which is both strong and wear long. For Grade 1 material, we reduce the alloy composition; therefore the wear life is 2/3 of Grade 2. And our Grade 3 is best material which wears 1.3 times of Grade 2.

How to Indentify A CAT Style Bucket Tooth?

To determine the size of J Series of a CAT Style tooth, whose reference has disappeared due to wear or any other reason, take the dimensions shown below.

CAT Stype Bucket Tooth

1. Place a tape measure across the back of the tooth at the midpoint of the side walls.

2. In addition, the second and third digits in the CAT part number often refer to the series. Example: 1U3352=J350 series.

Tips On Choosing the Right Bucket Teeth

1. Identify Your Application Requirements

Before purchasing, it is necessary to understand the working conditions of your bucket teeth, such as hard rock, loose gravel, clay, or sand. General-purpose teeth often suffice for mild conditions, while more abrasive or rocky environments may require heavy-duty or specialized teeth (rock chisel, tiger, etc.) to withstand intense wear and tear. CFS team can recommend a suitable type for you.

2. Consider Material and Manufacturing Process

Bucket teeth can be produced through casting or forging, with each process offering distinct benefits. Forged teeth tend to have superior impact resistance but costs more, making them ideal for extreme digging tasks. High-quality cast teeth can also perform well in various conditions, especially when producing using precision methods such as investment casting.

3. Evaluate Hardness vs. Toughness

A balance between hardness (wear resistance) and toughness (impact resistance) is key. Excavation in hard, abrasive environments often demands higher hardness to prevent premature wear, while repetitive, high-impact tasks need teeth with excellent toughness to avoid cracking or breakage. Always look for teeth rated to the correct hardness levels suitable for your specific operations.

4. Assess Supplier Quality and Support

Before purchasing, check the supplier’s reputation, quality certifications, and after-sales support. Reliable suppliers not only offer durable, well-engineered products but also provide guidance in selecting the right tooth shape, size, and material. A dependable partner will stand behind their products with warranties and technical assistance, ensuring your equipment runs safely and efficiently.
