Stainless steel and aluminum are the common material for casting. Although stainless steel castings and aluminum castings are similar in appearance, they each have distinct characteristics that make them unique. Before beginning your next project, it is necessary to consider the main differences between stainless steel casting and aluminum casting:
The casting processes to form stainless steel castings and aluminum castings are not the same. Generally, stainless steel castings are formed by investment casting process, while aluminum castings are produced by gravity casting or die casting process.
While stainless steel castings and aluminum castings are both strong for application, stainless steel castings are typically stronger. However, because aluminum castings are lighter than stainless steel castings, they have a higher strength to weight ratio. This makes aluminum castings an ideal choice when both strength and lightness and are needed.
Aluminum casting is typically less expensive than stainless steel casting; however, both can be purchased at affordable prices and both are highly recyclable environmentally-efficient.
Aluminum casting creates a passivation layer that helps it resist oxidation and corrosion. Aluminum casting comes in multiple different alloys such A356, A380, etc. Stainless steel casting contains chromium which has corrosion resistance properties. Stainless steel casting also comes in different alloy, with the bulk of all stainless being 304, 316, 2205 , etc. 304 is the most common type of stainless steel casting. 316 has a greater resistance to corrosion. 316 stainless steel casting costs costs more than 304 stainless steel casting, but it will last longer.
